Jamaal Rogers

Citizen Button.png  Ottawa Citizen "Poet Laureate' article
Jamaal Jackson Rogers (JustJamaal) is a performance poet and hiphop artist who uses rhyme, theatre and dance to deliver his art which has been dubbed as “polyphonic.”  His topics range from parenting to emotional maturity; from global issues to spirituality. Though his stage name doesn't imply it, his choice of moniker is highlighted in the intimate attention he pays to his audience; a poet who offers you nothing less than himself.
While not performing, Jamaal is the operator of his own after-school program, a residential counsellor for adults with disabilities, half of the organizing team for the Urban Legends Poetry Slam and also the creator of and managing director of Make Spoken Word Go Viral, an organization dedicated to supporting the spoken word art form by promoting and highlighting poets across Canada. Jamaal was recently announced as the recipient of the 2016 Ontario Arts Foundation’s Artist Educator Award. This award is given annually to an Ontario resident who exemplifies excellence in arts education, demonstrates a unique approach to their arts education practice, creates meaningful learning experiences for young people, inspires connections to the arts beyond the classroom and continues to maintain an active arts practice.
